The Cards

Traditionally, Tarot decks consist of 78 cards. (There are a few unconventional decks that have variations of this)There are numbered cards from 1-10 in four different suits. These are called the minor arcana cards. There are court cards (face cards) to go with each of the suits. These include the page, the knight, the queen and the king. Then there are 22 additional cards not belonging to any suit called the major arcana cards. These cards carry significant meanings. Some of these cards you may have heard of such as the sun, the moon, the death card, the lovers, the high priestess and the wheel of fortune to mention a few.

Today there are hundreds of decks to choose from. Each deck has its own unique images and distinctive stories to go along with it. Some examples of a few decks and their themes would be: dragons, faeries, ancient Egyptian culture, native American's, & Greek mythology. The Rider-Wait deck is probably the most popular and top selling deck available to date, they've even produced them in several different languages. I know of no other decks that have done this.

Interestly enough, as many different decks that have been created over the years, the meanings of the cards have always remained the same.
